  • Also known as house rat, brown rat, sewer rat, and wharf rat
  • Most widely distributed rat species in the United States
  • Reddish to grayish brown with lighter underside
  • Adults weigh 12-16 oz and the body can be up to 10 inch long
  • Blunt nose
  • Poor vision, but great sense of smell and hearing
  • Lives in burrows in fields and farm land, but enters buildings in the fall
  • Prefers lower floors of a building
  • Can get through openings the size of a quarter
  • Prefer foods with high carbohydrate and protein content
