  • Common name: European Mantis
  • Size: 2-3 inches
  • Prefers to live in meadows, fields, gardens, roadsides
  • Eats insects like crickets, flies and mosquitoes
  • It gets its name from it’s prayer-like posture of folded front legs
  • It uses it’s spiked long front limbs to grab it’s prey.  These spikes help the mantis to get a strong hold on the struggling insect as it devours it.
  • It is the state insect of Connecticut.
